The American girl group 3Quency just released an anthem that shows they are serious about becoming a real force in music. Written by award-winning singer-songwriter Raye and Steve Mac (Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”), who also produced the track, “Once I Was a Good Girl” serves major “main pop girl(s)” energy and stands as a strong follow-up to the trio’s debut sizzling single, “Top Down.”
3Quency, comprised of Brianna Mazzola, Nori Moore, and Wennely Quezada, rose to fame as the inaugural winners of the hit Netflix series Building the Band. Their record deal with Record/Columbia Records was announced in August, just over a month after they made history by taking home the title in July. Music fans and industry observers have been paying close attention to one of pop’s newest girl groups, whose infectious sass and sweetness echo TLC and 3LW, paired with vocals that would make Destiny’s Child and Fifth Harmony proud.
In “Once I Was a Good Girl,” the trio sings about moving on from a lover’s betrayal. The rebellious, workplace-set music video was directed by award-winner Ava Rikki, whose résumé includes projects from Babyface, Alicia Keys, Muni Long, Coco Jones, Teddy Swims, and Meghan Trainor.
Fans have praised the sophomore single for its nostalgia, standout bridge, and vocals. Many feel the track proves why they won the competition. Listeners have also pointed out how successful the pairing with Raye is. Research also shows that Mac himself has a history of producing for major groups like One Direction, Little Mix, and BTS.
While "Once I Was a Good Girl" sounds like a hit, it's not guaranteed that it will be one. We all know that great songs do not always get the recognition they deserve. Hopefully, this doesn't happen here because it's clear that 3Quency and their team are determined to keep winning.
Currently, 3Quency is on their North American Bandemonium tour, sharing the stage with third-place Building the Band finalists, Soulidified. The tour kicked off on October 30 and runs through November, with the groups recently performing to a sold-out crowd at Irving Plaza.
For us at suchabop!, this track doubles down on that “we are not playing around” energy we mentioned earlier. Is it living on your repeat list, too?
